Sri Lanka can be great value for travellers, but there are a few things you shouldn't be paying silly money for. Here are 5 things to check before paying.

Don't chase the cheapest price. Chase a clear price. Ask what you're paying for before you agree. A good operator shouldn't have a problem explaining the costs.
1. Tuk-Tuks
Don't just jump into the first tuk-tuk and ask the price when you arrive. Ask the fare before you leave, use the meter where appropriate, or check a ride-hailing app such as PickMe or Uber where available. If the price sounds ridiculous, thank them and check another option.
2. Airport Transfers
After a long flight, it's easy to accept the first transport option you find. Instead, know the price before you travel. Ask whether the quote includes highway tolls, parking, and driver charges. A slightly cheaper quote isn't cheaper if extras suddenly appear later.
3. SIM Cards
Don't pay an inflated price just because you've landed and need internet. Check official tourist packages from operators like Dialog or Mobitel at the airport. You'll normally need your passport for registration.
4. Souvenirs, Gems and Tourist Shops
Slow down! If you're buying something expensive, especially jewellery or gems, don't feel pressured into buying because someone says 'Special price just for you, mate'. Compare prices and check seller documentation. Your driver suggesting a shop doesn't mean you have to buy anything.
5. Tours and Safaris
Don't look only at the cheapest or most expensive price. Ask what's actually included. For safaris, check if jeep, entrance tickets, and fees are included. For round tours, check driver meals, accommodation, parking, tolls, and daily kilometers.
